Onondaga County Legislator Maurice Brown and legislature candidates Jo Bennett and Tammy Honeywell announced they will run on the “Affordability Slate,” a joint campaign focused on improving the lives of lower and working-class citizens, according to a Monday release.
The launch accompanies Bennett’s candidacy announcement for Onondaga County’s 15th district seat, a position Brown has held since November 2023. Brown announced his run for New York State Assembly on Friday. Honeywell, a local activist and social worker, will also be on the ticket running for the 8th district seat.
The joint campaign is built on three pillars: safe and affordable housing, universal childcare and free transportation, according to the release. Other priorities for the trio include racial justice and “abolishing” Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“We’re launching our joint Affordability Slate focused on expanding housing and delivering real results. Let’s get to work,” Brown said in the release.
Bennett, a physics teacher in the Syracuse City School District, said they are part of the Affordable Slate because they want to provide the same community support to the city that helped them get where they are today.
Brown officially endorsed Bennett in the release, writing that he would not have left his position without a leader to take over.
“I would not have launched my run for Assembly unless I knew District 15 would be in capable hands,” Brown wrote. “That leader is Jo (Bennett) and Jo has my full endorsement.”
Having worked for the Onondaga County Department of Social Services for over 10 years, Honeywell said she knows how local government works and impacts residents, she wrote in the release. She plans to ensure that the Affordability Slate prioritizes human rights.
All three candidates are members of Syracuse Democratic Socialists of America and are endorsed by the New York Working Families Party.
“Whether it’s fighting to tax the rich, abolish ICE, or pass the New York Health Act, they have always been fighting for us,” Jordan Bellassai, CNY Working Families Party Chair, wrote in the release.
The Democratic primary will be held June 23. Early voting begins June 13.
