Syracuse University’s Office of Student Experience issued safety tips ahead of bid night in a Friday email.
The email from Anne Lombard, Student Engagement’s executive director, addressed winter weather and alcohol safety as well as individual responsibility amid bid night weekend celebrations and a bar crawl.
Lombard encouraged students to be mindful of time spent outside and to intervene “with care” if someone is left alone in the cold. Onondaga County was placed under a winter weather advisory by the National Weather Service.
The weather advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Sunday, with Syracuse expected to see a low of 1 on bid night.
In preparation, the Department of Public Safety will increase police presence around campus this weekend, Lombard wrote. This enhanced presence is not intended to “discourage” celebrations but provide “readily available support.”
Students are also encouraged to look out for others’ well-being and seek assistance if needed. The email lists SU’s medical amnesty policy as a means of support, ensuring students who cooperate with staff and/or first responders will not face conduct charges for alcohol or drug violations.
“I trust that you will continue to represent your organizations with integrity by making choices that reflect the shared values of leadership, scholarship, service and community that define Greek Life,” Lombard wrote.
Student Experience also included drinking safety tips, emphasizing students should take advantage of campus or city resources as needed. Students can call DPS at 315.443.2224 or Barnes Center at the Arch at 315.443.8000 for 24-hour support.
