In its trip to North Carolina to play North Carolina and Duke, Syracuse fared about as poorly as it could have.
The Orange were swept by both teams 4-0 last weekend. Good news: They had a chance to bounce back in their next contest at Boston College, a team they’d beaten in their last seven meetings.
SU (5-5, 1-2 Atlantic Coast) made it eight in a row Saturday evening, as it flipped the script from the previous weekend, sweeping the Eagles (6-5, 0-3 Atlantic Coast) 5-0 in the final outing of their three-match road trip.
Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik continued their dominant run in doubles play, handling Olivia Benton and Leydon Games by a 6-1 tally in the No. 2 doubles match. Soon after, Syracuse’s No. 3 pairing of Constance Levivier and Leena Bennetto would fall 6-2 to Bella Camacho and Tola Glowacka.
With the score tied 1-1, and the No. 1 pairing of Anastasia Sysoeva and Nelly Knezkova down 5-3 to BC’s Natalie Eordekian and Seren Agar, it looked like Syracuse would lose the doubles point and need the extra win in singles play to win.
Knezkova and Sysoeva clawed their way back into the match, though, and ended up forcing a tiebreaker to win 7-5 and secure the doubles point for Syracuse.
Singles play got off to a near-perfect start for Syracuse, with 5-of-6 players taking the first set. It was Wojcik who got the Orange fired up the quickest, winning the first set 6-0, setting the tone for the rest of the players to continue the run of dominance she started.
Syracuse’s fortunes continued through the second set of singles play, as four matches were decided in straight sets. Sysoeva, stepping into the No. 1 singles spot for the first time this year, won 6-3, 6-3 to put Syracuse one point away from triumphing outright.
Swapping with Sysoeva in the No. 1 spot was Shastova. Shastova had been struggling of late, but found a bit of her groove again, taking down Agar 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Orange.
As Bennetto contributed to Syracuse’s scoring, winning 6-4 and 6-3 over Games. With that, the match was officially over, with the Orange up 5-0. Syracuse had completely flipped the script from its previous two matches. This time, they possessed the broom and did the sweeping instead of being swept. The result was the Orange’s maiden conference win.
Syracuse finished the three-match road trip 1-2 and will return to Drumlins for a clash with SMU March 8.
