Syracuse Senior Deputy Athletics Director Herman Frazier is retiring immediately, Syracuse.com reported Saturday, joining SU Director of Athletics John Wildhack, who announced his retirement Wednesday. SU will now need to replace its top two athletics administration positions.
Frazier joined the Orange in 2011 as their deputy athletic director/chief of staff after previously spending time with Hawaii, Arizona State, UAB and Temple. He was later promoted to his current role at SU in 2016.
With Syracuse, Frazier had many responsibilities, including acting as an administrator of its football, women’s lacrosse and men’s rowing teams and helping with football scheduling. He’s also served on the NCAA Track and Field Committee and has spent extensive time working with the U.S. Olympic Committee after competing in track and field at the 1976 Montreal Games.
Per Syracuse.com, Frazier will fly to Los Angeles on Monday to talk about the 2028 Olympic Games for SU’s Falk College. He said he’ll remain an active member of the Olympic Committee despite his retirement.
As opposed to Wildhack, who joined SU in 2016, Frazier was with the Orange for much of its early 2010s success. That includes six bowl appearances in football, three combined Final Fours for men’s and women’s basketball and 10 combined semifinals berths for men’s and women’s lacrosse.
Though none of those programs claimed a national title in Fraizer’s tenure, Syracuse’s field hockey and men’s cross country teams captured national championships in 2015, while men’s soccer won in 2022.
With Frazier and Wildhack — who will stay with SU until July 1 — both leaving, Syracuse has two major decisions on its hands. The university announced Thursday the creation of a seven-person committee to choose its next athletic director and potentially fill Frazier’s position as well.
“Knowing the trustees, they will put together a plan as expeditiously as they possibly can,” Frazier said. “I’d expect they’ll start the search for a new athletic director quickly and get somebody on board before John leaves.”
