After starting the season with two home wins, Syracuse tennis headed south hoping to snap Florida International’s 35-game home winning streak. However, those dreams turned into a nightmare at the hands of the defending Conference USA Champions.

This Friday, Syracuse (2-2, Atlantic Coast) was dominated on the road by Florida International (1-0, Conference USA). After beating Cornell and Fordham to start the season, the Orange lost to Florida Atlantic Friday. Sunday’s loss to the Panthers punctuates an 0-2 road trip to Florida.

Despite it being its first match of the season, FIU quickly settled in for doubles. Jelena Vico and Aleksandra Simeva made quick work at second doubles, winning 6-2. Shortly after, the No. 3 pair of Maria Lucia Araoz-Gosn and Vittoria Baccino secured the doubles point for the Panthers in a slightly closer 6-4 win. It was Syracuse’s second match in a row where it dropped the doubles point.

The Orange were outmatched in singles play as well. FIU won the first set in all six matches. In those first six sets, Anastasia Sysoeva put up the best fight for Syracuse, only winning three games.

The second half of the matches proved to be much of the same story. Haram Kim lost her second set 6-2, and Sysoeva fell shortly after.

With its backs against the wall, Syracuse couldn’t deliver. Nelly Knezkova lost her battle at second singles to Vico to secure the loss.

Still, the Panthers continued to pour it on down. Despite battling for forty minutes longer than any of her teammates, Monika Wojcik eventually lost.

It punctuated the sweep for the Panthers and a disappointing weekend for the Orange.
