Syracuse track and field trekked to Cornell Saturday to close out its indoor regular season at the Marc Deneault Invitational. SU had 24 athletes compete in Ithaca, with four first-place finishes and four additional podium finishes across the men’s and women’s teams.
The distance team had a strong showing at Cornell. In the men’s mile, sophomore Asher Danielson placed first, clocking in at 4:10. His teammate, freshman Tristan Thurneysen, came in second with a personal best of 4:15.
The Orange dominated the mile on the women’s side as well, claiming the top 3 spots. Gretta Johnson took the lead halfway through the race and never looked back, crossing the line in 5:03. Her teammate, Sarah Lawson, finished three seconds behind her, starting in fifth and working her way up to second.
Finally, Beatriz Fernandes fell as low as sixth place, but worked her way up in the pack and finished third. She narrowly defeated a racer from Hamilton by less than a second.
In the women’s 60-meter hurdles, Tia Outlaw came in first with a time of 8.36 seconds. It’s her second win in the event this season. In the same event for the men, Isaiah Hayes came in first at 8.02 seconds. It marks back-to-back wins at Cornell for Hayes, who set a personal best at the same venue in January.
Shayla Ford also finished second, setting a personal best in the open 200-meter with a time of 25.36 seconds.
Next, Syracuse heads to Boston for the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships, which runs from Thursday through Saturday. Last year, the men’s and women’s teams entered the postseason near the bottom of the conference. But this year, SU’s success could be a harbinger of some future success in the competition.
