Syracuse women’s lacrosse (0-1, Atlantic Coast) dropped three spots to No. 14 in Inside Lacrosse’s Week 1 Poll, which was released Monday morning. The Orange opened their season with an uninspiring 9-5 loss to No. 7 Maryland Friday, beginning the Regy Thorpe era on the wrong foot.

A loss to the Terrapins wasn’t necessarily surprising, but SU barely put up a fight, scoring two of its goals in the final two minutes to avoid a six-goal defeat. As Thorpe said postgame, the slate only gets harder, with No. 1 North Carolina coming to the JMA Wireless Dome Friday.

Against Maryland, Syracuse never found its footing. Despite limiting UMD midfielder Kori Edmondson to one assist — her lowest point output since March 21, 2025 — Lauren Lapointe ran rogue for five goals. Kristen Shanahan chipped in two, while Ava Meyn and Kayla Gilmore each added one.

SU goalie Daniella Guyette simply had no answers for Maryland’s attack. She said Lapointe’s performance caught her by surprise as she racked up a 47.1% save percentage. Meanwhile, UMD goalie JJ Suriano made 16 saves on 21 shots, resulting in a career-high 76.2% clip.

The Orange’s lone bright spots were Caroline Trinkaus — who began her sophomore season with two goals — and Molly Guzik — who added one while recording six draw wins as SU’s new specialist this season.

Syracuse’s biggest challenge still awaits. The Tar Heels earned their fourth national championship last season and are led by 2025 Tewaaraton Award winner Chloe Humphrey. They started their 2026 campaign with a 19-11 win over James Madison.
