Syracuse University Chancellor-elect Mike Haynie will start his term on May 11, nearly two months before his initial July 1 start date, departing Chancellor Kent Syverud confirmed in a Tuesday morning campus-wide email.
The change comes as the University of Michigan announced Monday that Syverud’s term as university president will begin the same day.
In the Tuesday email, Syverud wrote that SU is “well-positioned” to move its timeline forward with Haynie.
“I am deeply grateful for the many well wishes I have received as my time at Syracuse draws to a close. I am proud of all that we have accomplished together, and we still have more to do in the coming weeks,” Syverud wrote.
UMich Interim President Domenico Grasso will leave the university on May 8, according to the UMich release. Provost Laurie McCauley will serve as acting president for two days — on May 9 and 10 — with Syverud starting his term May 11.
In August, Syverud announced he’d be stepping down as SU’s chancellor at the end of the spring semester. He confirmed in January he would become UMich’s president.
Haynie currently serves as SU’s vice chancellor of strategic initiatives and innovation and is the third internally selected chancellor in SU’s history.
“I leave knowing this community is in exceptionally capable hands, and I look forward to all that Syracuse University will continue to achieve under Chancellor Haynie’s leadership,” Syverud wrote.
