The Syracuse Police Department arrested a man carrying a firearm on Waverly Avenue near Syracuse University’s Schine Student Center Saturday afternoon, SPD wrote in a Sunday statement.

Mateu Healey-Parera, 22, was taken into custody by Syracuse University Department of Public Safety officers, according to the release.

After receiving a report of a suspicious person on Waverly Avenue, DPS found Healey-Parera with a gun around 4 p.m., according to a Sunday campus-wide email addressing the incident.

Healey-Parera, charged with criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds, has no affiliation with SU. He was waiting to board an Ithaca-bound bus at the time of his arrest, according to the SPD release.

As of Sunday evening, Healey-Parera remained in SPD custody, and the department said there was no current threat to the public.

SPD is leading an ongoing investigation, and asks that anyone with additional information or questions contact the department’s Criminal Investigations Division at (315) 442-5222.
