Syracuse wide receiver Calvin Russell III will miss an “indefinite period of time” after suffering an injury during spring football, Fran Brown said in a statement released by Syracuse Athletics Tuesday. The extent of the injury and how it happened hasn’t been revealed yet. Brown will hold his weekly media availability tomorrow, which could provide further detail for the situation.

“I’m confident Calvin will return stronger because of our culture, commitment to our players and the relationship Calvin, his family and I have,” Brown said in the statement.

Russell was SU’s top recruit in the 2025 recruiting class. 247Sports ranked Russell as the 31st-best player in the country and third-best wide receiver, making him Brown’s highest recruit since arriving at Syracuse. Last July, Russell picked the Orange over schools like Miami and Michigan.

As a senior with Miami Northwestern High School, Russell recorded 47 catches for 742 yards and eight touchdowns. He also showed proficiency on the basketball court. Russell enrolled early at Syracuse in January and immediately joined SU’s basketball roster. The only game he appeared in was an 88-68 loss to North Carolina State, where Russell scored three points.

Once Syracuse’s season ended in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, Russell joined the football team. Despite being a freshman, Russell was expected to have a big role with the Orange in 2026.

With Steve Angeli returning from a torn Achilles, Russell was set to be one of his top targets on the outside. Darrell Gill Jr. and Johntay Cook — SU’s top receivers from last season — transferred to Ole Miss, while other depth pieces left the program as well.

Russell had the chance to fill that void alongside fellow freshman Amare Gough and transfer receivers Elijah Moore, Cole Weaver and others. Instead, Russell’s health will be a question until Brown provides specifics on what the timeline for his recovery will be.
