Former Syracuse quarterback Rex Culpepper has died at age 28, Syracuse Athletics announced Monday. The Tampa Bay Times reported that Culpepper died in a dirt bike accident in Georgia on Saturday.

“No one expects to meet the love of your life and lose them in only (six) short years after meeting,” Culpepper’s fiance Savanna Morgan wrote in an Instagram post on Monday. “Rex (didn’t) always believe in soulmates but towards the end he told me that he (didn’t) realize what having a soulmate felt like until we felt like extensions of each other.”

Culpepper played for SU from 2017-2020, mainly serving as a backup. He started six games over the course of his career, including five as a senior in 2020. In 24 total games, he recorded 139 passes on 266 attempts for 1,546 yards. Culpepper accumulated 11 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions with the Orange.

The quarterback overcame a lot at SU. In 2018, he was diagnosed with Testicular cancer when he was just 21 years old. That didn’t stop Culpepper, who ended up throwing a touchdown in between his cancer treatments. Culpepper ultimately beat the disease and finished out his career with Syracuse.

Former SU quarterback Eric Dungey — who Culpepper backed up — also took to social media to honor his former teammate.

“Rip Rexy. A guy who had zero fear and truly lived life to the fullest. Thanks for all the memories brother,” Dungey wrote.
