Syracuse women’s rowing rose from No. 12 to No. 9 in the Week 4 Pocock Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Poll, which was released Tuesday. The move follows the Orange winning four events at the Doc Hosea Invitational on Sunday.
The ninth-place ranking is higher than SU reached all of last season.
Last week, SU trailed No. 9 Virginia, No. 10 California and No. 11 Michigan in the poll. But strong performances at the Doc Hosea Invitational allowed the Orange to jump California, Michigan and Rutgers.
Seven of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s programs, including SU, are ranked in this week’s poll — No. 1 Stanford, No. 6 Virginia, No. 10 California, No. 15 Duke, No. 16 Miami and No. 19 North Carolina. The ACC has more ranked teams in the top 25 than any other conference.
The Orange already raced one ACC foe at Doc Hosea — the Cavaliers, who took four of five contested events. The Orange’s lone win came in the second varsity 8, where it edged Virginia 6:36.1 to 6:38.6 seconds, while the Cavaliers controlled the varsity 8, varsity 4, second varsity 4 and third varsity 8.
Though SU lost 80% of its races against UVA, it stayed tight with the Cavaliers in all of its four head-to-head losses.
Tuesday’s rankings marked the final poll before the Cayuga Cup this upcoming weekend, where the Orange will take on two Ivy League opponents in Saratoga Springs, No. 3 Yale and Cornell.
The Orange are looking to flip the script from last year’s Cayuga Cup, where Yale captured its third straight title. Syracuse finished second across all seven races of the regatta.
“It was a really challenging day of racing where we went up against a top competitor…and they showed us what it is to be a top competitor in all of the events,” head coach Luke McGee said in a press release. “We’re going to have to show some resiliency to pick ourselves back up.”
