Former Syracuse center Arinze Onuaku has been named to Gerry McNamara’s staff as an assistant coach, SU Athletics announced Monday. Onuaku spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Siena.
Ben Lee and Ryan Daly were also officially announced as assistants after reports emerged that they would be joining SU’s staff last week. Jamal Brunt will also reportedly join the Orange’s staff, but he wasn’t officially announced with Onuaku, Lee and Daly.
Onuaku had an eight-year professional career, playing in 19 NBA games from 2011-19 after averaging 9.2 points and six rebounds per game with the Orange from 2005-10. He then began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the NBA G-League’s Capital City Go-Go during the 2022-23 season.
A Lanham, Maryland, native, Onuaku was an assistant at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., for the 2023-24 season before he joined McNamara at Siena.
With Onuaku, Lee and Daly officially on staff and Brunt reportedly set to join them, the Orange can still hire one more assistant, if they want. Right now, Pete Corasaniti is still listed on SU’s website as an assistant and director of basketball operations, but it’s unclear if he’ll remain in those roles.
