NYSDOT closes BBB driveway, intersection to construct traffic circle

NYSDOT closed the BBB driveway and will provide temporary parking for garage permit holders Wednesday. The closure, along with the Almond St and Van Buren St intersection closed temporarily April 15, is meant to construct a traffic circle. Lars Jendruschewitz | Senior Staff Photographer

The New York State Department of Transportation permanently closed the current driveway to Syracuse University’s Brewster, Boland and Brockway complex at the Brockway, loading dock, garage entrance Wednesday, according to SU’s Parking and Transportation Services

This closure is in addition to DOT’s closure of the intersection of Almond Street and Van Buren Street to begin construction of the new traffic circle in that location on April 15, according to the email sent to Brewster/Boland Garage Permit Holders and obtained by The Daily Orange. The DOT anticipates this closure to last for six months.

The traffic circle, a two-lane roundabout along the future “Business Loop 81” at Van Buren Street, is part of the New York State Department of Transportation’s Interstate 81 Viaduct Project that will remove old infrastructure and replace it with a community grid.

The roundabout, part of the project’s Contract 4, will be one of the community grid’s primary access points to downtown Syracuse that will “calm traffic” and “enhance safety for pedestrians and motorists,” according to the NYSDOT website.

The DOT is providing a temporary driveway for the next six months directly off Almond Street to allow continued access to the Brewster/Boland Garage for permit holders, Parking and Transportation Services wrote.

Permit holders for the Brewster/Boland Garage can use the temporary detour to park in the garage for the rest of the semester, or holders can park in the Raynor Ave. lot until commencement on May 9, according to the email.
