Syracuse University announced the members of the search committee tasked with selecting the next Hendricks Chapel dean on Thursday.

The committee comes after former Hendricks Dean Brian Konkol left SU in January to become president of Valparaiso University.

The team is co-chaired by Dawn Singleton, SU’s vice president for the student experience, and David Aitken, chair of the Hendricks Advisory Board.

The other 10 committee members include:

  • Gisele Marcus, Board of Trustees member
  • Joan Nicholson, life trustee member on the Board of Trustees and member of the Hendricks Chapel Advisory Board
  • John Papazoglou, SU’s senior vice president and chief operations officer
  • Ingrid Coutts, member of the Hendricks Chapel Advisory Board
  • Jillian Juni, Syracuse Hillel executive director
  • Gerry Waterman, Catholic chaplain
  • Martha Sutter, teaching professor in the Setnor School of Music and College of Visual and Performing Arts senior associate dean of academic affairs
  • Tom Barkley, professor in the Whitman School of Management and Christian Staff and Faculty Association advisor
  • Mian Muhammad Abdul Hamid, graduate student and Student Assembly of Interfaith Leaders convener
  • Alana Mitchell, undergraduate student, Christian Outreach member and Hendricks Chapel hospitality associate

“Hendricks Chapel touches every corner of campus life,” outgoing SU Chancellor Kent Syverud said in a Thursday release. “We need a strong leader who will build on what makes Hendricks Chapel special and bring people together in new ways.”

As Hendricks approaches its centennial in 2030, the incoming dean will lead the chapel through a “new strategic plan,” according to the release.

Konkol’s 9-year tenure as Dean increased student participation by 933%, the release states.

“Hendricks Chapel’s next dean will inherit a remarkable legacy and a profound responsibility,” Chancellor-elect Mike Haynie said in the release. “We are looking for a leader who understands the spiritual, cultural and communal dimensions of this role.”

The committee is holding three listening sessions open to campus and community members on Zoom. The first session was held Friday, with two more to follow on April 13 at 3 p.m. and April 15 at 2 p.m.
