The American Association for Italian Studies affirmed that Syracuse University’s Italian Bachelor of Arts program is transitioning to a combined major in a Monday Instagram post.

“We will continue to deliver our full slate of courses related to the Italian language, literature and culture – and hope you will continue to support us by joining our events, taking our courses and studying abroad in Florence – AND majoring or minoring in Italian!” Lauren Surovi, SU’s language and Italian program coordinator, wrote in the post.

Italian is one of several SU language programs listed as “closing” in the academic portfolio review and will be consolidated into one major, World Language and Culture B.A.

The new major, “currently pending approval” from the New York State Education Department will allow students to choose between two tracks, according to the post.

The first track allows students to split a 30-credit requirement between two different languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish, according to a Thursday report by SU’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

The second track focuses on only one language, and students can select from either French or Italian, with one additional linguistics or world literature course.

SU’s Spanish major remains open, separate from the world language major.

The statement also referenced a “misleading” headline from the New York Times, which directly referenced the closure of SU’s Italian program following the review.
