Syracuse forward Akir Souare has entered the transfer portal, NewsChannel 9 reported Tuesday afternoon. Souare is SU’s seventh player to declare for the portal, joining forwards Aaron Womack, Tyler Betsey and Donnie Freeman, guards Naithan George and Luke Fennell and center Tiefing Diawara.
In 29 appearances with the Orange, Souare averaged 0.9 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. After starting 14 games in 2024-25 at Georgia Tech, the 6-foot-9 big played just 8.3 minutes per game and started zero games with SU.
Souare never found a rhythm across his sophomore season with the Orange. He scored a season-high six points against then-No. 16 North Carolina, but was held scoreless 21 times.
While George — who transferred from GT to SU with Souare — was immediately thrust into Syracuse’s rotation as its starting point guard, Souare’s minutes often came when William Kyle III needed a rest.
Following Syracuse’s season-ending Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament loss to SMU, Souare signaled he might return to the Orange. He said, “Yeah, why not? The season is over, so we just stick together, and then I try to see what the opportunity is to come for next year.”
However, as the bulk of SU’s foundation enters the transfer portal, Souare will search for his third school in three seasons.
