Former Syracuse men’s basketball guard Luke Fennell committed to St. Mary’s, Syracuse.com reported Friday. The Australian spent one season with the Orange, averaging 1.1 points across 10 games.

His last appearance was Jan. 27 against NC State, when he saw the court for two minutes. After the season, he had meniscus surgery to fix a partial tear.

Fennell redshirted his freshman year with SU and has four years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-6 Melbourne, Australia, native joined Syracuse from South East Melbourne Phoenix in Australia’s National Basketball League. Fennell also has international experience with Australia’s under-20 national team.

He joins a Gaels team under a new head coach. Former head coach Randy Bennett coached SMC for 25 years but took Arizona State’s head coaching job this offseason. Mickey McConnell, Bennett’s longtime associate and assistant coach, is taking over at St. Mary’s. The Gaels have made the last five NCAA Tournaments out of the West Coast Conference, while Syracuse has missed the last five.

Fennell is the Orange’s third former player to announce their new home. He follows guard Naithan George, who stayed in the Atlantic Coast Conference at Pitt and Tyler Betsey, who heads to the Big 12 with BYU. Forwards Aaron Womack, Donnie Freeman and Akir Souare, plus center Tiefing Diawara, remain in the portal.
