Former Syracuse forward Tyler Betsey has committed to BYU, 247Sports first reported Monday night. In his lone year with the Orange, Betsey led SU with a 40.7% clip from 3.
Betsey transferred to Syracuse from Cincinnati before last season. Coming off the bench, he was a key depth piece in Adrian Autry’s third and final season at the helm. Betsey played in 31 games, not starting a single one, and averaged 6.7 points and 2.8 rebounds while shooting 40.2% overall.
He entered the portal after the season, one of seven SU players to do so following its 15-17 campaign. Those include forward Donnie Freeman and point guard Naithan George, among others, both of whom averaged over 30 minutes per game last season.
Betsey becomes the second of those seven to choose his new school after George picked Pittsburgh earlier on Monday. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining and will now play for his third team in three years.
Now, Betsey joins a BYU team that finished 23-12 and made the NCAA Tournament under second-year head coach Kevin Young. The Cougars eventually fell to No. 11 seed Texas in the first round. Betsey’s 3-point accuracy can help improve BYU’s 34.5% mark from deep.
The Orange, under new head coach Gerry McNamara, have been busy in the portal. They snagged Siena’s Gavin Doty and Temple’s Aiden Tobiason, both double-digit point scorers, as well as Siena forward Tasman Goodrick and McNeese State guard Garwey Dual.
