No. 9 Syracuse men’s rowing showed out Saturday in its first cup race of the spring season. For the second straight year, SU swept its morning races against No. 13 Cornell and No. 15 Navy to secure both the Goes and Stagg Trophies. The Orange’s varsity 8 claimed its sixth consecutive Goes Trophy, while SU clinched its seventh Stagg Cup in a row.
In the 71st edition of the annual regatta, Syracuse’s top boat continued its program-best streak with a 4.7-second win, finishing with a time of 5:32.50. In their home waters, the Big Red finished second, followed by the Midshipmen, who finished 9.9 seconds behind the Orange. After the day’s racing, Syracuse hoisted the Goes Trophy on the dock of the Cornell boathouse, awarded to the winner of the varsity 8 showdown.
The Orange’s other boats got their fair share of action, too. In the first race of the day, SU’s third varsity 8 narrowly beat Cornell by 3.7 seconds, completing the course on Cayuga Inlet in 5:41.00 seconds. Navy trailed behind, finishing a full 10.3 seconds after Syracuse.
Later in the morning, SU’s second and fourth varsity 8s both achieved convincing victories over the rest of the field. The Orange’s 2V8 went first and set the tone with a strong performance, ending in 5:37.70 and winning by 12.3 seconds over Cornell, which beat Navy by 23.8 seconds. The 4V8 followed that with a large win of its own, finishing with a time of 5:47.60. A whopping 13.9 seconds later, the Midshipmen crossed the finish line just half a second ahead of the Big Red.
By collecting the most points across the other three heavyweight races, with wins in the second, third and fourth varsity 8s, the Orange claimed the Stagg Cup. The result continued Syracuse’s recent success at the annual regatta.
