Syracuse wing Shy Hawkins intends to enter the transfer portal, she announced via social media Friday afternoon. Hawkins becomes SU’s fourth player to depart via the portal, joining guards Madeline Potts and Sophie Burrows and forward Justus Fitzgerald.

In two seasons with the Orange, Hawkins averaged 4.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. She played just 13.7 minutes on average across those two years but assumed a larger role this season, starting 17 games.

Out of William Floyd High School (New York), Hawkins was a four-star recruit and ranked No. 72 in the nation. She was stuck behind Georgia Woolley, Burrows and Dominique Camp, among others, in the backcourt as a freshman. This year, she stepped into SU’s fifth starting spot, lining up alongside Burrows, Dominique Darius, Laila Phelia and Uche Izoje.

Hawkins scored 10-plus points five times this season. Her biggest impact came on Jan. 18 against Stanford, when she played a team-high 39 minutes and scored 10 points when Phelia was sidelined with an injury.

“That’s the best basketball I’ve seen Shy play since she’s been here,” SU head coach Felisha Legette-Jack said postgame.

Syracuse’s backcourt depth is diminishing by the day. With Phelia out of eligibility, Burrows, Potts and Hawkins departing via the portal and Darius’ waiver for an extra year of eligibility undecided, one of the Orange’s top priorities will be replenishing the unit.
