Former Syracuse guard Sophie Burrows has committed to North Carolina, she announced on social media Saturday. The guard spent three seasons at Syracuse, starting 65 games and most recently averaging 11.0 points and 5.8 rebounds as a junior.
The Victoria, Australia, native entered the transfer portal April 1, becoming SU’s second player to depart for the portal. That number has since ballooned to seven, as Syracuse currently has just four players rostered for the 2026-27 season.
Burrows has easily been the biggest loss of that bunch. As a three-year contributor and two-year starter for the Orange, Burrows made 92 appearances and averaged over 10 points a game in two seasons. She was a steadying presence in Syracuse’s backcourt in its turnaround 24-8 campaign this year, providing reliable 3-point shooting and defense.
Burrows visited North Carolina earlier this week and made her commitment official Saturday. She joins an Atlantic Coast Conference foe, which went 28-8 last season and was a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels made the Sweet 16 but ultimately suffered the same fate as Syracuse, falling to No. 1 seed UConn.
North Carolina and Burrows will likely play Syracuse at the JMA Wireless Dome next season, as the Orange traveled to Chapel Hill this year, falling to the Tar Heels in overtime in January.
