Syracuse goalie Daniella Guyette was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The honor comes after Guyette held then-No. 15 Notre Dame, which averaged 18.6 goals in its previous five games, to single digits, while nabbing 11 saves in SU’s win.
Most of Guyette’s heroics came in the fourth quarter and triple overtime. In the final regulation stanza, the senior stopped four shots, including three by Kate Timarky and Madison Rassas, who sit second and third in the ACC in goals. Half of her saves in the frame were on free-position shots.
In the third overtime, Guyette halted three more. Whether it was back-to-back shots by Megan O’Hare or Emma Murphy’s try with two seconds left in the frame, Guyette stood strong.
The Newbury Park, California, native has been the engine behind SU’s stalwart defense, which concedes 7.33 goals per game, fifth-fewest in the country. Syracuse hasn’t allowed double-digit goals since February, a testament to Guyette’s prowess.
Tuesday’s honor marks the netminder’s second this season. She took the award three weeks ago following a statement performance against then-No. 5 Yale. Her 7.01 goals against average — third-best in the country — is a considerable improvement from last season, when she conceded north of 11 and stopped just 43.3% of her shots.
Now, Guyette thwarts 48.8%, the 13th-highest in the nation. That’s a large reason the senior is expected to be selected in the inaugural Women’s Lacrosse League College Draft Wednesday.
