Syracuse University recognized former Chancellor Kent Syverud with an honorary doctorate and emeritus status at Sunday’s commencement ceremony, according to a Monday release.
Emeritus status is an honorary title awarded to retired SU faculty and administrators who have “demonstrated distinguished service, sustained contributions, and a high level of scholarly or creative achievement,” according to SU’s website.
Although he was unable to attend the ceremony due to his recent brain cancer diagnosis, Syverud recorded a video congratulating the graduates.
“Chancellor Syverud’s impact on Syracuse University will be felt for generations to come,” Chairman of the University Board of Trustees Jeffery Scruggs said.
Scruggs said the recognition is among the highest of the university’s honors and is more than just a ceremonial gesture. He said it’s reserved for those who’ve made “extraordinary contributions” to SU, and not routinely granted to chancellors.
The recognition is only granted to those whose “legacies have forever transformed and strengthened” the university, Scruggs said.
Syverud additionally received an honorary Doctor of Laws, which his son David accepted on his behalf.
“You have made these last 12 years more than I could possibly have imagined,” Syverud said in his video message. “I will carry you with me always.”
