Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies announced a new artificial intelligence major Tuesday that will teach students the “mathematical knowledge” and societal impact of the technology.
The major, a bachelor of science in Integrative Artificial Intelligence, will begin its programming in fall 2027 and will only be offered on campus.
Students who enroll in the program will be required to take an accompanying minor in “applied domains” such as business, analytics, communications, media or policy across the university.
“A Bachelor’s in Integrative AI opens doors across technology, policy, business, media, and the social sector, giving you access to roles that connect technical capability with real-world application,” its website reads.
The major is divided into four credit groups and includes 11 required courses. Core introductory classes include IST 101 and IAI 105 – first-year forum and introduction to artificial intelligence, respectively. Beyond the introductory classes, the curriculum includes a technical core, a socio core, as well as upper-level and minor credits.
Some of its class titles include “AI and Humanity,” “Technical Fundamentals of AI” and “Analysis of Human AI Systems.”
Professors confirmed to be teaching within the program include Jaime Banks, a researcher studying human-AI relationships, Bei Yu, who researches machine learning and information integrity and Johannes Himmelreich, who specializes in AI ethics and public policy.
The major arrives at SU as universities across the country flock to create AI majors to attract prospective students, who see the programs as valuable in a time when the entry-level job market shrinks due to the technology.
The iSchool claims the program has a job placement rating of 91%, according to its website. The school cites Forbes and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, saying the career path is in the top 30 tech fields for job satisfaction as well as bringing a median salary of $108,000.
