Jamir Brown didn’t care that there wasn’t power. The sophomore began warming up for the final heat of the 110-meter hurdles at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Saturday when a thunderstorm hit Louisville, Kentucky. Brown’s championship race was postponed by three hours. But he had a plan.

“My coach and I knew exactly what to do,” Brown said. “I got some food, rested and was ready for the final race.”

“I felt like I had a great warmup the first go around, so I was like, ‘Oh (no)’ when I heard there was a delay,” he added.

When the skies cleared around 8:00 p.m., Brown’s heat was first up. He flew out of the blocks and crossed the line in 13.25, breaking Syracuse’s program record — which, sure enough, he set the day before. His time was top-five in the nation and earned him first place in the meet, becoming the fourth Orange hurdler to win a conference title since SU joined the ACC in 2014.

Syracuse’s distance crew also landed on the score sheet, thanks to third-place finishes by Benne Anderson and Drew Zundell in the 1500-meter race. Anderson finished in 3:41.07 with Zundell behind him at 3:42.15.

The men’s team wrapped up with 22 points, enough to secure 14th place among 17 schools. The women’s team didn’t score.

Next up for the Orange’s is the NCAA Regional Championships, where racers with the top 48 times in their respective regions compete. For relays, the top 24 teams face off. SU’s meet takes place in Lexington, Kentucky, on May 28.
