Three-star class of 2027 safety Jalen Welch has committed to Syracuse, he announced on social media Tuesday. Welch is the 38th-best safety in his class and 52nd-best player from Georgia, per 247Sports.
As a junior at Grayson High School (Georgia) last fall, Welch totaled two interceptions, five pass deflections, 36 total tackles and four tackles for loss in 10 games. Welch stands at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds.
Besides Syracuse, he held 22 other offers, which included Power Four programs Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Boston College, Iowa State and Kansas State. He previously made an official visit to SU on June 12.
Welch’s commitment is the 18th in the Orange’s 2027 recruiting class, bumping Syracuse from 44th to 37th in the country, per 247Sports. He’s SU’s fourth defensive back commit of the class, which also includes three-stars Travis Miles, Masiia Acrey and Jamel Griffin.
Syracuse has also seen numerous decommitments in recent days, including three-star linebacker Ian McDuffie flipping to UCF, three-star running back Xavier Bala moving to Boston College and three-star running back Sa’Nir Brooks reopening his recruitment.
Before Welch and his fellow 2027 recruits come to campus, the Orange look to rebound from a miserable 3-9 campaign in 2026, with their season beginning Sept. 5 versus New Hampshire.
