Three-star defensive back Jamel Griffin Jr. committed to Syracuse football’s 2027 class, he announced on social media Monday afternoon. The 6-foot, 160-pound Alabama native chose the Orange over Kentucky, Tulane and South Florida, among nine other schools.

Griffin took an official visit to Syracuse this weekend, and SU defensive backs coach Perry Eliano visited the three-star recruit at his Alabama home on May 20. Griffin is the 47th-best player in The Yellowhammer State and the 124th-best cornerback nationally, per 247Sports.

At Opelika High School (Alabama), Griffin excels on the gridiron and track. During his junior year, he recorded 83 tackles, four tackles for loss and one fumble recovery while Opelika finished as the runner-up in Alabama’s 7A state championship. He also ran a 10.57-second 100-meter dash and a 4.43-second 40-yard dash.

Griffin is the Orange’s third 2027 commit in the last two days, joining offensive lineman Nico Ramos and edge rusher Braylon Otis. SU’s class now contains 17 players — 16 three-stars — and ranks 30th in the country.
