Former UMass-Lowell midfielder Johnny Soi has committed to Syracuse men’s lacrosse, he announced on social media. As a junior, Soi started 11 of the River Hawks’ 12 games in 2026, picking up 15 goals and 19 points.

Soi, a native of Kerhonkson, New York, was one of UMass-Lowell’s five captains this season. The River Hawks finished just 2-10, but Soi ranked third on the team in both goals and points in 2026.

As a sophomore in 2025, Soi led the River Hawks with 22 goals, despite starting just nine of their 13 games. His 27 points ranked third on the team, behind just Danny Burke and Garrett Murphy. Overall, Soi started 28 of his 37 appearances for UMass-Lowell, amassing 47 goals and 58 points.

Soi didn’t enter the transfer portal initially, but decided to depart UMass-Lowell after River Hawks head coach Drew Kelleher accepted Vermont’s head coaching position Monday. He was one of over 20 River Hawks to enter the transfer portal after Kelleher’s departure.

Now, he’ll finish his college career in a Syracuse midfield that has some newfound vacancies. Luke Rhoa and Michael Leo — two previous fixtures in SU’s midfield — both graduated this spring, leaving the Orange in need of reinforcements.
