I-690 eastbound lanes to close late 2027 due to I-81 reconstruction

The eastbound lanes of Interstate 690 will close for two years beginning in late 2027 as Syracuse integrates the intersection into its city-wide Interstate 81 reconstruction, Syracuse.com reported Tuesday.
To align with the city’s broader I-81 viaduct deconstruction plans, the closure will remove all ramps connecting I-690 to I-81 in order to build new ramps and bridges to create a new interchange.
Under the CNY Alliance construction contract, work to build the new interchange that’s already started along Crouse Avenue and Irving Avenue will also be completed.
Although the detour for I-690 will begin next year, drivers will start to see preparation for the construction this fall, according to transportation officials. The westbound lane will operate as normal during the closure.
Drivers looking to head east toward DeWitt will be able to use the new North Crouse on-ramp to get back on I-690.
