The David B. Falk College of Sport officially launched an applied nutrition track to its Bachelor of Science in nutrition at the start of the fall semester, according to a Sunday release.
The launch comes after Syracuse University closed Falk’s nutrition science and food studies majors last semester, merging them into a general nutrition major due to low enrollment. The separate tracks allow students to further customize the major, the release said.
The applied nutrition track is designed with a science-based approach and is intended for students interested in human health or sports nutrition.
“This track significantly expands opportunities for students seeking a science-based nutrition degree aligned with a broad range of professional goals,” Jason DeFreitas, chair of the Department of Human Performance, said in the release.
Holding a “rigorous core curriculum” similar to the dietetics track, the applied nutrition track allows students to take a broader scope of coursework. Course options include health humanities, exercise science and culinary studies, according to the release.
“This breadth of customization reflects Falk College’s commitment to preparing graduates not just for their first job, but for lifelong careers in a rapidly evolving health and wellness landscape,” the release reads.
The track will be available to all students newly enrolled in the nutrition major this fall.
