Ongoing I-81 viaduct construction to affect SU Welcome Week traffic flow

The New York State Department of Transportation’s construction projects will impact roads during Syracuse University’s Welcome Week, Aug. 20-23, according to a campus-wide email from Vice President and Chief Campus Facilities Officer Pete Sala.
As a part of the I-81 viaduct project, portions of Renwick Avenue, Van Buren Street and Almond Street near West Campus have been closed by NYSDOT. The closures will continue into the fall 2026 semester.
While students move in throughout the week, Van Buren Street will be open from Henry Street to Irving Avenue. Access to Brewster Hall will be limited to directly from Van Buren Street and access to the Brockway Hall loading dock and BBB parking garage will be from Almond Street.
In his email, Sala warned that the area is a very active construction site and advised caution at all times. The I-81 Connect Mobile app offers real-time updates from NYSDOT, Sala said.
