Scholars & Champs relocates to Crouse Avenue after 7 years downtown

Clothing store Scholars & Champs relocated from its downtown Syracuse location and home for seven years, opening in its new space located in the parking lot behind Faegan’s Cafe & Pub.
After Original Grain closed its Salina Street restaurant in October, Scholars & Champs owner Bert Aufsesser said business became slower at his neighboring vintage clothing store. Aufsesser hoped to move closer to the Syracuse University campus.
After months of searching, he landed on a spot within walking distance.
“I explain it as going from the minor leagues to the big leagues,” Aufsesser said.
“You know, I just got called up to the majors, and this is where all the magic happens.”
On Saturday, Scholars & Champs officially reopened in its new home.
The new space is nearly double the size, which Aufsesser said can accommodate his expanding collection of secondhand and custom SU- and New York-themed apparel. The majority of customers are SU-affiliated, so Aufsesser believes the new location will grow his reach.
Previously, the retail space was home to Bayberry Uniforms, which sold hospital scrubs. Scholars & Champs’ relocation near Marshall Street marks an addition to the recurring retail and storefront changes near SU.
