Syracuse University Chancellor Mike Haynie’s special committee will host listening sessions to hear student, faculty and staff perspectives on its key questions surrounding the future of SU, the committee announced in a campus-wide email Wednesday.
Haynie announced the formation of a special committee designed to address SU’s low enrollment and budget deficit in June. The committee is tasked with answering “foundational” questions about the purpose of enrolling at SU and what the university must do to deliver on its promise to students.
The special committee and sessions aim to answer two questions: “What is now — and what can be in the future — the purpose and distinctive contribution of Syracuse University for the students who enroll here, and more broadly in American higher education?” and “What must change, and what must be preserved, for this institution to fully deliver on our promise to our students and their families, and to our faculty, staff, alumni and community?”
The sessions are taking place in addition to the university’s standing meetings such as monthly faculty and staff meetings. Two committee members will host each session and the conversations will inform the committee’s analysis and written report it delivers to the chancellor by Nov. 15, according to the email.
The session schedule is as follows:
Staff: Tuesday, Sept. 22, 12:30–1:30 p.m. on Zoom
- Graduate and professional students: Wednesday, Sept. 23, 7–8 p.m. on Zoom
- Undergraduate students: Monday, Sept. 28, 2–3 p.m. in the Schine Student Center’s Underground
- Undergraduate students: Tuesday, Sept. 29, 7–8 p.m. on Zoom
- Faculty: Thursday, Oct. 1, 1–2 p.m. on Zoom
- Open campus, any constituency: Monday, Oct. 5, 6–7 p.m. on Zoom
Those looking to participate in a session must RSVP and have the option to respond to a post-session survey, which will be released soon, according to the email.
