Meet the EIC: Delia Sara Rangel
My transition into management wasn’t easy. I was six hours ahead, working out of my shoebox of a double room in Florence, Italy, hoping I wouldn’t wake my poor roommate. I started production at 11 p.m. and stayed up as long as I needed to.
I was advised to nap during the day to make up for the lost sleep, but I was 20-years-old and in Italy; why would I spend my days napping? I instead opted for far too many €2 cappuccinos and Red Bulls from the vending machine.
All that’s to say is that I love this paper. I love the late nights spent at 230 Euclid Ave. (even virtually from Europe), and I love the way this house brings people together. It takes a certain kind of person to give up their sleep and sanity to help produce a newspaper — and keep coming back.
When I was approached about applying for this role, I was scared and hesitant. But this place has given me far more than a few good clips; it’s shaped me into the person I am today and I’m beyond proud to call it my second home.
Since those long nights in Italy, Managing Editor Noah Nussbaum, Digital Managing Editor Quinn Postman and I have worked hard to maintain the rigorous and uplifting environment The Daily Orange thrives on. We’re dedicated to upholding its standards and building upon the foundation laid by the management teams before us.
We’ve placed more resources into our video section, meeting our audience where it’s at with a new emphasis on short-form video production. We’ve also hired three new development editors who are devoted to building new contributors up and guiding them through our often intimidating process. The addition of two new alumni engagement editors will help keep our dedicated alumni in the loop about what we’re up to.
Now that we’re all back on campus, the house is again filled with laughter, the click-clack of over 40 keyboards and a desire to produce strong, impactful journalism.
We’re excited to be a small part of The D.O.’s long legacy and look forward to sharing it with our readers.
