SU cross country’s Connell Alford, Keira Rogan earn weekly ACC awards

Syracuse cross country’s Connell Alford and Keira Rogan were named Atlantic Coast Conference Performers of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Both runners won their respective races at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, helping SU’s men’s and women’s teams sweep the meet.
Alford was the sole ACC Performer of the Week on the men’s side, while Rogan shared the women’s weekly honor with North Carolina’s Ciara O’Shea.
Last year at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational, Alford finished sixth, just outside of scoring for the Orange. This season, he won the event with a time of 25:27.6 and averaged a 4:54-minute mile. His top finish helped the men’s team sweep its race, beating second-place Pitt 15-55.
Rogan, a Hamilton College transfer, finished first in her first race of the season. At a 5:26-minute mile pace, Rogan (20:15.1) beat Pitt’s Maureen Cheruiyot by 6.9 seconds. Her placement helped the women’s team upset No. 10 Penn State by four points, as the Orange won the event with 32.
Alford and Rogan join Charles Guerrera as Syracuse runners to have won ACC weekly honors this season. The Orange will look to add more at the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 26 in New Jersey.
