SU field hockey’s Jovie Weaver named ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week

No. 12 Syracuse field hockey forward Jovie Weaver was named an Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. She shares the title with California forward Liz Klompmaker.
In Weaver’s first week of collegiate field hockey, she scored the game-winning goal in both of the Orange’s comeback wins against Fairfield and Northeastern last weekend. She also posted a pair of shots in each game and ranks tied third on the team with four this season.
In the second quarter of Friday’s 2-1 victory over the Stags, Weaver was perfectly positioned to rebound a ball that trickled off the post following a send into the box. The freshman found the back of the net for her first goal with SU, lifting it to an insurmountable lead that didn’t change for the rest of the game.
On Sunday against the Huskies, Syracuse found itself tied at two apiece after Hattie Madden’s tap-in goal during the third quarter and about 41 minutes into play. Forty-seven seconds later, Weaver capitalized again. The Orange were given a penalty corner, where Weaver received a trap at the top of the circle. With a hard-driven shot into the bottom corner of the cage, she scored her second game-winning goal for SU to keep it undefeated.
After former Syracuse defender Bo van Kempen led the team in scoring in back-to-back seasons, Weaver has emerged as an early candidate to seize that spot.
