Alex Kline hired as University of Washington men’s basketball GM

Former Syracuse men’s basketball general manager Alex Kline has accepted the same position at the University of Washington, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Thursday. Kline becomes the Huskies’ first general manager in program history.
Kline spent two seasons overseeing the construction of SU’s rosters. He broke into the basketball industry at 14 with his website, The Recruit Scoop, then became an NBA scout for several years after graduating from Syracuse in 2016. Kline returned to his alma mater on June 28, 2024, to serve as the men’s basketball program’s first-ever general manager.
In 2025, his first full offseason in the role, Kline — alongside former Syracuse data analyst Eugene Tulyagijja — developed an algorithm to help Syracuse build a 2025 recruiting class ranked No. 19 in the nation by 247Sports. It featured four-star high schoolers Sadiq White and Kiyan Anthony, as well as impact transfers Nate Kingz and William Kyle III.
However, SU’s results didn’t reflect that talent. Syracuse missed the NCAA Tournament in both of Kline’s seasons as general manager, finishing 29-36 overall and 13-25 in Atlantic Coast Conference play in his SU tenure.
After the 2025-26 season — when Syracuse went 15-17 and 6-12 in ACC play — Kline was dismissed on March 11, hours after former SU head coach Adrian Autry was let go. The Daily Orange previously reported that Kline wasn’t given an option to return, and former Hampton associate head coach Greg Fahey replaced him.
Now, Kline has the chance to turn around a Washington program that hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2019. The Huskies have gone 29-35 in two seasons under Danny Sprinkle, Utah State’s former head coach.
