Mike Haynie will officially be inaugurated as Syracuse University’s Chancellor in the JMA Wireless Dome on Friday. The ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. and is open to the public and campus community.
The Investiture Ceremony is one of many events throughout Thursday and Friday celebrating Haynie and his installation. To give students and faculty the option to attend the ceremony, SU also canceled all afternoon classes on Friday.
Haynie was selected to serve as SU’s 13th Chancellor and President on March 3, after previously serving as the university’s vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and innovation and executive dean of the Whitman School of Management.
“I am profoundly humbled and honored to serve as Syracuse University’s 13th Chancellor and President, and I am deeply grateful to every member of this community whose voices, wisdom and investment in this University made this moment possible,” Haynie wrote in a message on SU’s website.
The Investiture Ceremony is one of many events celebrating Haynie and his official installation as chancellor.
Festivities begin Thursday with an “archival exhibition” across campus, according to the university’s website.

The exhibition, titled The Summit: Syracuse University into the Future, is hosting pop-up activities across campus. At the All Day Charting Our Future Together pop-up, Professor Rochele Royster will run an interactive display where attendees can fill out postcards with their ideas for SU’s future.
Another part of the exhibition, titled VPA in the Making: Ideas, Experiments, Performances and Possibilities, will feature performances and interactive activities from students, faculty and alumni from the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
Once Thursday’s summit concludes, SU will host a football game watch party with prizes and food at the Miron Victory Court, according to the university’s website. After the Friday ceremony, the Dome will host Orange Fest to “celebrate a new era of leadership,” which will include student performances, therapy dogs and a dunk tank.
“Syracuse University is not just an institution to me. It is home,” Haynie wrote. “It is a community that has shaped me, challenged me and given me the privilege of doing the most meaningful work of my life.”
