Class of 2009 gift should go to need-based scholarships

Class of 2009 gift should go to need-based scholarships

For the first time in 14 years, the senior class of Syracuse University is giving back to the university with a class gift. The current goal of the campaign is for each member of the Class of 2009 to donate $20.09 – a realistic amount that should go toward investing in future SU students.

A class gift is standard in high school, not a bad idea for outgoing college classes as well. Leaving something tangible at SU is a good way for a class to be remembered in a positive way, rather than just grabbing a diploma and leaving the university.

Though the 2009 Class Council does not currently know how the money will be used or where it will go to, it should benefit students directly. It should not go toward a new building or a new technology, but rather toward scholarships for students in need that are coming to the university.

In these poor economic times, having this class gift go toward scholarships for students who are in need of financial assistance would be an especially pertinent gift. It would leave a lasting impact on the university in a notable way by allowing students who would not normally have the chance to attend SU to come and get an education.

Reinstating a class gift is a good idea, and it would serve a great purpose going to students who need and deserve the money.
