Staff: Women’s ice hockey wins pair of road games at RPI
Volleyball
After winning seven consecutive games, the Syracuse volleyball team (18-7, 7-2 Big East), was swept this weekend in the state of Wisconsin.
SU fell to Big East foe Marquette (15-9, 4-5) on Saturday afternoon, 3-1. Senior middle blocker Sarah Morton and junior middle blocker Hayley Todd each had ten kills to lead the Syracuse attack. After the Golden Eagles took the first two sets, Syracuse won the third set, 25-23, before losing in the fourth and final game.
Syracuse failed to redeem itself on Sunday, falling to non-conference opponent Wisconsin-Green Bay (8-16), 3-1. Morton again led SU’s offense, providing 13 kills on the afternoon. Todd added 12 kills and sophomore outside hitter Erin Little chipped in with 10.
Syracuse continues its road schedule with two Big East matches this week. The Orange will square off against Louisville on Friday at 7 p.m., and will meet Cincinnati on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Men’s Soccer
The Syracuse men’s soccer team allowed DePaul forward Alex Mangan to score his second goal of the game with 6:46 remaining in regulation, breaking a tie game and leading DePaul to a 2-1 victory Saturday. The loss essentially ended SU’s hopes at a postseason berth.
Orange freshman midfielder Mark Brode scored SU’s lone goal of the contest in the 36th minute.
For Brode, it was his second career goal and it increased his season point total to six, which ranks third on the team.
Brode’s goal came just over a minute after Mangan scored his first of the game at 34:04 to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 advantage. Senior Tom Perevegyencev played the ball left to Brode and he converted the chance with a shot to the far side of the DePaul net, squaring the match at the 35:10 mark in the first half.
Mangan’s game-winning goal came off of a deflected teammate’s free kick past SU goalie Ryan Jones. The goal put an end to a physical contest that saw each side receive three yellow cards. A total of 20 fouls were also whistled in the match.
Syracuse will finish out its regular season schedule when it plays host to St. John’s Wednesday, Oct. 27 before facing Cincinnati Saturday, Oct. 31 at SU Soccer Stadium.
Cross country
While most of Syracuse’s top runners sat out the rainy John Reif Memorial Run, junior Michael Brocks and sophomore Cassie White recorded the Orange’s best times of the event.
Brocks recorded a time of 26:36, good for third place in the men’s five-mile race and White finished second in the women’s five-kilometer race with a time of 18:31.
Following White, seniors Stefanie Slekis (18:53) and Lynne Mundy (19:46) placed third and fifth respectively and junior Jenna Bieri (19:48) earned sixth place.
Ice Hockey
With a pair of one-goal victories, the Syracuse ice hockey team swept a weekend series at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y.
The Engineers (2-4-2) scored first in each contest. However, a resilient Orange (3-4-1) team came back both times to earn a 3-2 overtime win Friday and a 4-3 triumph Saturday.
In Friday’s matchup, freshman Jessica Sorensen scored her first career goal to tie the game, 1-1, in the final minutes of the second period. With 15:37 remaining in the third, sophomore Lisa Mullan found the back of the net to give SU the lead, 2-1. But with only two minutes left to play, RPI scored to force an extra session.
Syracuse prevailed when sophomore Janelle Malcolm tallied her team-best fifth goal of the season three minutes into overtime. All four of SU’s scores came on the power play.
On Saturday, trailing 2-1 to start the third period, a trio of Orange freshmen saved the day. Isabel Menard, Jessica Sorensen and Kelsey Welch each scored within the opening four minutes of the final stanza to help SU erase its deficit. Junior co-captain Julie Rising had tied the game at one when she scored early in the second session.
For the weekend, senior goalie Lucy Schoedel turned away a total of 45 RPI shots.
Syracuse doesn’t play again until its home opener Friday, Nov. 6 versus College Hockey America-foe Niagara.
Field Hockey
The Syracuse University Field Hockey team continued its three-game road trip this weekend with games against the Villanova Wildcats and the No. 10 Boston College Golden Eagles. The Orange (15-2, 5-0 Big East) defeated the Wildcats, 5-3, on Saturday, but dropped the second game of the weekend to the Golden Eagles, 1-0.
The weekend split came after undoubtedly the team’s biggest game and victory of the year, a 3-2 double overtime victory at No. 7 Connecticut.
Friday in Villanova, Pa. SU extended its perfect 5-0 conference record thanks to one of its top offensive outbursts of the season. Syracuse scored five goals on the afternoon with freshman back Amy Kee leading the way with two goals and an assist. Fellow back Maggie Befort scored as well.
The victory clinched a share of the Big East regular season title for Syracuse, along with the No. 1 seed in the Big East conference tournament.
Two days later, the Orange traveled up to Chestnut Hill, Mass. for yet another matchup against a Top 10 team, the squads sixth on the season. Syracuse was 4-2 in those matchups, including Sunday’s loss.
The 1-0 setback marked the first shutout loss of the year for the team, and ended SU’s 12-game winning streak. The Orange outshot the Golden Eagles 17-2 despite the loss. Chelsey Feole was the sole goal-scorer on the afternoon for either team.
