STAFF : Ice hockey loses by 7 goals to No. 2 Cornell

Cornell completely dominated Syracuse on Tuesday night, outshooting the Orange 59-10 en route to a 9-2 victory.

The Big Red forwards consistently tested Syracuse goalie Kallie Billadeau all game and took advantage of plenty of power-play opportunities. Syracuse racked up 11 penalties for 22 total minutes, and No. 2 Cornell converted on three of its eight attempts on the power play. Billadeau made 50 saves in net despite the loss.

The Orange (5-7, 0-0 College Hockey America) held Cornell (5-0, 3-0 ECAC Hockey) scoreless until the Big Red’s Brianne Jenner scored her fifth goal of the season with 5:53 left in the first period. Less than two minutes later, Jillian Saulnier extended Cornell’s lead to two with a shorthanded goal.

Cornell buried SU in the second period, recording 24 shots on goal compared to only five shots for the Orange.

Chelsea Karpenko scored the first power-play goal for the Big Red early in the second period before Rebecca Johnston made it 4-0 just 38 seconds later.

Syracuse finally got on the board six minutes into the second period, when Taylor Metcalfe sent a lead pass on the breakaway to Holly Carrie-Mattimoe, who gathered the puck and beat Cornell goalie Amanda Mazzotta for her fourth goal of the season.

The third period produced similar domination for Cornell, as it scored four goals with an 18-2 shot advantage. Karpenko, Saulnier, Hayleigh Cudmore and Catherine White added Big Red goals in the final period to close out the win.

Syracuse scored a meaningless goal on the power play when Margot Scharfe netted her fourth goal of the season, but that only brought the Orange within six goals.

SU returns home for an exhibition game against McGill at 5 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavillion on Friday.
