President Donald Trump is withdrawing his bid for New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik to serve as ambassador to the United Nations, The New York Times reported Thursday afternoon.
Trump said Stefanik better served the GOP cause in the House of Representatives in a Truth Social post. Stefanik now returns to a Congress where Republicans hold a narrow 218-213 majority.
“As we advance our America First Agenda, it is essential that we maintain EVERY Republican Seat in Congress,” Trump wrote in the post. “We must be unified to accomplish our Mission, and Elise Stefanik has been a vital part of our efforts from the very beginning.”
Stefanik, who represents New York’s 21st congressional district, had advanced past the preliminary confirmation process, but hadn’t yet been confirmed, syracuse.com reported. In his Truth Social post, Trump hinted that Stefanik may hold a role in the executive branch eventually.
“I look forward to the day when Elise is able to join my Administration in the future. She is absolutely FANTASTIC,” Trump wrote.
He has not announced a new nomination for the position.
