SUNY ESF is responding to a swatting call, Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety said in a campus-wide email Monday afternoon. DPS said there is no active shooter threat.
The Syracuse Police Department confirmed there is no active shooter in a Monday afternoon email. According to the email, SPD was made aware of the swatting call at 4:10 p.m. Monday. Before SPD officers were dispatched to the call, it was cleared by other agencies.
ESF students received a text message at 4:17 p.m. alerting them of an “active shooter event.” DPS said students could expect an increased police presence this afternoon as authorities respond.
SPD said it is working with its local partners to ensure campus safety.
Swatting calls are intentionally false reports of emergencies made to public safety officials with the intent of triggering an emergency response, according to the National 911 Program.
