A swastika was found etched into the Mount Olympus stairs on Wednesday, according to Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety.

A student reported seeing the carving on a wood side pillar on Tuesday. DPS and Facilities Services said they removed the carving and captured images for its investigation.

They are unable to identify any suspects or witnesses at this time, according to a Friday campus-wide email.

“I am deeply troubled that someone would deface University property with this hateful symbol,” said Craig Stone, DPS chief and associate vice president. “We are doing everything we can to identify the individual or individuals responsible. We ask that anyone who may have information about this incident contact us immediately.”

The investigation is ongoing.

Anonymous tips can be reported to DPS through its Silent Witness tool or the Orange Safe app.
