UPDATE: This story was updated at 7:36 p.m. on Aug. 25.

Human dynamics majors previously housed in Falk College of Sport officially transitioned to their new home colleges, Syracuse University announced Monday.

The School of Social Work now resides in the School of Education. Marriage and family therapy merged with human development and family science, which is now housed in the College of Arts and Sciences under the Department of Human Development and Family Science.

Public health programs also joined the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

“These changes align with the University’s goal of creating academic synergies among, and supporting the continued growth and impact of, human dynamics programs,” the release states.

The release lists each of the human dynamics majors alongside their new locations, degrees offered and explanations for “why it fits.”

Now located in the School of Education, the School of Social Work will offer a bachelor of science and masters degree in social work, a Juris Doctor/Master of Social Work and a social justice minor.

The release states that the “core values of social work—service, social justice, dignity and the worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence—align closely with the School of Education’s mission.”

Through the College of Arts & Sciences, human development and family science will offer a bachelor of science, Ph.D. and a minor. Marriage and family therapy will offer a master’s, the first accredited degree of its kind in the country, and Ph.D. – the only in the state. It will also offer minors in mindfulness and contemplative studies and gerontology

Public health, now located in Maxwell, will use the school’s existing partnerships, including with the New York State Department of Health and the Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion.

“Public health and public policy are highly interrelated, and Maxwell is uniquely positioned to provide evidence-based solutions to the challenges facing public health leaders and practitioners,” the release states.

The school will offer a bachelor of science in public health and public health and management in partnership with the Whitman School of Management. SU will also offer a masters in public health, as well as a dual major with a master’s of business administration.

Falk College of Sport officially opened on July 1, making it the first college at a Research-1 institution to solely focus its academics on sport.

The university first announced in November 2024 that students currently enrolled in these programs would transition to their new schools and colleges after deliberation from the Human Dynamics Task Force, filled by students, faculty, staff and community partners.

In April 2024, SU initially announced its decision to drop “Human Dynamics” from Falk. Faculty, staff and students in Falk’s human dynamics programs claimed they received no prior official university communications pertaining to the changes to Falk College before the announcement, leaving them with uncertainty regarding the future of the non-sport departments.
