Syracuse cross country opened its season in Hamilton, New York, with both its men’s and women’s teams competing in the Harry Lang Invitational. Saturday marked the 14th time in the last 15 years the Orange have raced in the event.

The women’s team dominated the morning, claiming the first, third, fifth, seventh and eighth-place finishes. Sophomore Jayden Harberts finished in first place with a time of 17:55.3 on the 5K course. She was 16.8 seconds ahead of second place. Harberts finished third in the same event last year.

Redshirt freshman Carmen Luisi finished in third, 20.4 seconds behind Harberts. It was Luisi’s first race for the Orange. Fellow freshman Ella Masem finished in fifth, less than a second behind the fourth-place finisher. Senior Olivia Shattuck finished in seventh place, her best result in the event after previously placing eighth, 31st and 15th. The last top-10 finish for the Orange was sophomore Sarah Lawson, who placed eighth. Following Saturday, the women have won the event seven times in their previous nine attempts.

The men’s team was equally dominant, claiming all the top five finishes on the 6K course to extend their win streak since 2016. Redshirt freshman Asher Danielson, in his first race for the Orange, finished in first place with a time of 18:56.3. He barely edged out fellow redshirt freshman Sam Ricchiuti, who was just 0.3 seconds behind Danielson. Another redshirt freshman, Omar Alsaidi, took the final podium spot 3.1 seconds behind first place. Drew Zundell and Eamon Burke finished in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Both teams will be back in action Sept. 12 in Pennsylvania for the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational hosted by Penn State.
