Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety and the Syracuse Police Department are actively investigating two off-campus student housing burglaries, according to a Saturday campus-wide email.

The incidents, on Redfield Place and Harrison Street, occurred early Friday morning and evening, respectively. In both cases, an unknown suspect stole several electronics and personal belongings.

The burglar on Redfield Place also stole a pickup truck.

DPS determined the first burglary likely occurred between midnight and 10 a.m. on Redfield Place, according to the email. The unknown individual is suspected of having entered the residence through an unlocked back door.

On Harrison Street, an investigation determined the burglary likely occurred between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. with an unknown individual entering “an unsecured off-campus residence.”

“These incidents are often crimes of opportunity, where individuals look for residences that are easily accessible,” the email states. “Offenders target locations with unlocked doors or windows.”

Crime in Syracuse is down this month compared to 2024, WAER reported. The number of stolen vehicles has “plummeted by half” following a five-year average of lower crime throughout the city, in nearly all categories.”

DPS suggests students lock all doors and windows when leaving their residence, especially at night. Students are encouraged to place valuable items out of sight and in locked areas, as well as to place vehicle keys out of common areas where they can be found if someone gains entry.

Anyone with information about either incident can contact SPD at (315) 442-5222 or DPS at (315) 443-2224.
