Former President Joe Biden will build his presidential library in Delaware, despite previously considering Syracuse University, NBC reported.
The Joe and Jill Biden Foundation approved the location and a 13-person steering committee for the project, NBC reported. Biden is a 1968 graduate of SU’s College of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor.
The committee will raise money for the project, which may include an immersive exhibit highlighting Biden’s four years in office, NBC reported.
In a March 2024 interview with special counsel Robert Hur, who was investigating whether Biden was mishandling classified documents, the former president mentioned SU’s interest in hosting his presidential library.
“My recollection is there’s people competing,” Biden said in the recording. “Syracuse University would like it, University of Delaware would like it. They want to do it down here in Washington.”
The former president has spoken at six SU commencements, the most recent being in 2016, according to syracuse.com.
It’s unclear if Biden ever spoke with SU about the library. University officials have made no public comment on the project since the transcript was released.
The library doesn’t have a timeline for completion.
