Former Syracuse lacrosse player Mark “Red” Burnam passed away Wednesday at the age of 64. Burnam was part of SU’s first-ever national championship team in 1983. Following his SU career, Burnam played in the National Lacrosse League for over a decade, winning championships with the Buffalo Bandits in 1992 and 1993.

Burnam also played for the Haudenosaunee Nationals during their debut on the international stage in 1990. He stayed involved with the Haudenosaunee as a coach, leading them during the 2018 Federation of International Lacrosse World Lacrosse Championship, where they finished in third place. Burnam also served as IMG Academy’s head coach until 2019.

Tuesday, family and friends showed their support for Burnam by playing wall ball. Virginia Men’s lacrosse posted about it on social media. UVA head coach Lars Tiffany was an assistant on Burnam’s staff during the 2018 World Championships.

After Burnam’s passing, there was an outpouring of tributes on social media.

“Red was more than just a stellar lacrosse player. First and foremost, he was a dedicated family man and friend. He was a teammate, a colleague, coach and mentor…but he was also a “brother” to many,” The Haudenosaunee Nationals posted on Instagram.
